Mac Freezes on sys. restart

I was updating my system software on my MacBook Pro. When the laptop restarted a voice asked me if I wanted English to press the return button. After I hit return a screen appeared that said, "Reset Password". I was given three options to choose from but that is as far as I could go. The mouse arrow functions but the screen is frozen.
