internal superdrive no longer recognised on dis...

Hi,

I'm on a Macbook Pro (2011) core 2 duo currently on El Capitan 10.11.6

My internal superdrive stopped playing about the time I upgraded to mountain lion 10.8. and is no longer displayed on disk utility.

It accepts blank discs but rejects everything else. Since then, I've been afraid to upgrade the operating system beyond el Capitan.

Any ideas what might be the matter?

If it's OS related and it doesn't work on the current OS, I would want to try a different OS....
