Spell check and autocorrect not working
I have them both turned on, but they aren't working. No corrections and no red lines.
First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.
I don't know why - but spell check works intermittently for me as well.
I would suggest turning both features off - restart the iPad and then turn them on again and see if that helps.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work - you can try a reset as well.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
You can also reset all settings - Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings.
If you still have the issue, I don't know what else to suggest other than to restore the iPad - if you care to go through all of that.
I tried restarting, and it didn't work. I can't use the restore because this is a school iPad. So I guess I'll go with the draining idea.
No - don't do that. Philly means if the restore did not work - drain the battery and then restore again.
it is just another way to get a restore to work. If you cannot restore the iPad - don't let the battery drain. Try the other suggestions.
ok, well, I'll go with your reset idea then. not having autocorrect is bugging the crap out of me, and won't look too good in my science homework.

Use a dictionary.

The ironic thing is that I hate auto correct .... and the keyboard dictionary. I had to keep resetting the keyboard dictionary over an over - maybe 6 or 7 times - along with doing the system reset - before it finally worked for me. I mistyped "you" once or twice and the I locked in "YoY" somehow and it was driving me nuts for about a week until I was finally able to successfully reset the keyboard dictionary.
Don't do anything real drastic yet - try toggling the settings on an off - try the reset - maybe try both a few times - see what happens.
Well, that has nothing to do with it Philly. I am using a bluetooth keyboard and 4 of the letters are kinda bad on it, so I have to push down hard on them, and sometimes I forget to, so I put the misspelled words in the shortcut list, but it's not doing them for some reason.
Would resetting all settings resett the wi-fi & restriction codes also?
I have never done that but I do think that it will reset all of your preferences back to factory defaults. I'm not sure if you have to enter the WiFi settings or passcode again.
The preferences are things like the keyboard dictionary, the brightness level, the auto correct and spell check. I think that it is a relatively benign thing to do.
I copied this from How to reset iPad Settings - for Dummies
How to Reset iPad Settings
Life may not have a reset feature, but iPads do. If, for some reason, you want to return your iPad to its default settings, you can reset them. The last item under iPad's General settings is Reset. When you click it, you get options for resetting the following:
- Reset All Settings: Every one of the preferences and settings are reset, though information you've added to apps like Calendar and Contacts doesn't change at all.
Well, I need to put in the restriction code, so I guess it does... But, since it's a school iPad, I don't know what the restriction code is...
If you have a wirless keyboard, press and hold command, why you simutanouly press space bar; this will let you scroll through your various languages setting (ie. spanish or english). You should see the red lines appear under the text under spanish, then press the space bar again to confirm english. The red lines should appear under the text. I noticed its from using pages Icloud sync feature, from your mac to ipad. You can also press the world icon on your touch screen keyboard to get the same effect. Good Luck..
Spell check and autocorrect do not work when you us a kb with an ipad.
I had the same problem but I noticed that if you have multiple keyboards installed (for multiple languages) then if your keyboard is set on any other language besides English, then it will not correct anything that you type. Try switching to English (press on the globe button on your keyboard until you switch to English), see how that goes.
