[MacBook Pro 15" 2017] Flickering screen

Hi,

Currently on a 2017 15" MBP (specs: 2.9GHz i7, 16G memory, Radeon Pro 560 w/ 4GB memory, macOS 10.12.5) that is not even a month old, I started encountering periodic image flickering on the retina display.

Here is what I could gather:

  • The intensity varies in time, and can be barely noticeable at times.
  • It initially started just after a reboot, so I had no particular software running at the time
  • Several reboots didn't change anything
  • I've tried SMC and NVRAM resets to no avail
  • After a long pause (during the night) it seems to have disappeared. Although I doubt the problem is solved, I suppose it can hint to something linked to the computer workload (possibly overheating ?)
  • I initially wanted to try to boot on an external macOS partition in order to check if the current installation was at fault, but after cursory research I couldn't find an installation package (given I already have Sierra on this machine and the AppStore stops me from downloading it again -> if anyone knows of a safe way to re-download the OS I'd be glad to know)
  • Given the previous point, I tried to boot the internet recovery mode (Cmd+Option+R), and the flickering showed up there too, although I don't know if this is expected

Does anyone have any idea for something else that could keep the flickering in check, or even prevent it ?

Now, I know there was something similar with 2015 and 2016 MBPs (especially 15" from what I could gather), which makes me wonder:

  • Is there a clear picture of what precisely is the problem here ?
  • Is Apple aware of this problem on the 2017 version ?
  • If so, I suppose nobody here can say if or when a definitive fix can be expected ?
  • If so, what can I expect if I were to try to send the computer in for repair ? I depend heavily on this computer for work, and I can't imagine entering a cycle of periodically needing to return faulty computers every few weeks until the warranty expires. If it's a hardware problem can I expect a real fix ? For what it's worth the internet tells me that Genius Bar attempts at fixing it generally resulted in nothing.

Best regards,

Hi,

The first step is to bring the Mac to an Apple Store “genius” bar for a free diagnosis: https://support.apple.com/contact

I believe it is a hardware issue, and if so, ignoring it isn't going to make it go away, so whatever you have to put up with from Apple, the sooner you get it fixed, the longer you have left on your warranty if it happens again. "Genius" bars don't usually do a logic board replacement, so it will likely be sent in for repair. Only Apple can give you a time estimate on that.

That's a very reasonable answer, but unfortunately I'll have to get on a plane in about two weeks, and I'll need the computer where I go, so I can't take the risk right now.

I'm still hoping to hear from people who encountered the same issue, for a bit more insight.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro (two weeks old) which exhibited a similar problem just once.  When I opened the lid and put my finger on the sensor the display began flashing rather than flickering.  I couldn't get the cursor to go into the password box.  The screen went black, then began flashing again.  I closed the lid, left it for ten minutes, opened it again and all was back to normal.  That was two days ago and since then no recurrence.

I have made an appointment at a Genius Bar to see if the problem can be diagnosed.  I am wondering if it is something to do with graphics card switching?

Sorry if this is really a different problem - I don't think mine could be described as flickering, it was much stronger than that.
