How do I upgrade from osx 8.5

I just upgraded from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5 but it wasn't enough. In doing searches I can find no way to download either 10.9 or 10.10. On the Apple site it has updates for 10.9.1 and up, but it requires already having 10.9. Same for 10.10. And no system upgrades show up in the App Store. How do I get either 10.9 or 10.10?

Upgrade directly to El Capitan or Sierra depending on what Mac model you have.

Which type of Mac are you trying to upgrade the OS on? This is the standard procedure: How to get macOS Sierra - Apple Support. But not all Macs are able to run 10.9 or higher.

Any Mac which is running 10.8.5 can be upgraded at least as far as El Capitan.
