Artist Artwork is missing in iTunes 12.5
Hey everyone,
First off I am running iTunes 12.5.1 and iOS 10.0.1 on my Macbook Air and iPhone SE respectively.
In previous versions of both iTunes and iOS, iTunes has automatically added Artist artwork to my music collection. No, not Album artwork. Artist artwork.
Above you can see the artist Passenger has a blank artwork, whereas Pete Murray has the artist artwork
Both artists have all of their albums with the correct names and correct artwork, but the only difference between the two is that i have purchased one of Pete Murray's albums. So why has Passenger's disappeared? How can I add it again?
Thank you for all your help,
Grant
I don't know if this will work for everyone, but I've found it to work on my iPhone (haven't tried it on my Mac yet) but if you go into settings > mobile and turn on the Music app, all of the artworks reappear. The only reasoning I can put it down to is simply my music app was unable to connect to the internet to source the artist images. It's worked for roughly 90% of my library so I don't know what's happened to the other 10% but for now, it's a step in the right direction!!
Everyone else give it a shot, make sure your Music app is able to access the Internet and see if it makes a difference at all
Hello, apparently it has something to do with "purchased" songs. Apple have decided that if you have ripped an album, or downloaded it from another location, you get a pink microphone.
So if I understand your post correctly, iTunes is now doing the same thing as the Music App on iOS has been doing for several iOS versions.
There are a few solutions posted...one of which, was to rename all the artists in iTunes, by preceeding the name with a meaningless character, e.g: *artist name. Then when library is sync'd with the iDevice, artwork remains intact. It worked, but is time consuming and requires constant attention.
...This software improvement/development is really tiresome. I have no idea the "THOUSANDS" of artists in my music collection look like, nor do I care! However, I do recognise almost all of the artwork covers for the "TENS OF THOUSANDS"albums/tracks in my collection. And is one method of selection when playing music.
Artwork substitution is one of the main reasons, along with Apple Music, why I ditched iTunes and iOS Music app.
I guess that the s/w developers involved are from a different generation.
So if i add an asterisk for example at the start of all of the artist names, (eg. *Passenger) the artist artworks will return/reappear?
I always understood that iTunes recognised the artist name and cross checked it with their servers to supply my phone/laptop with the artist artwork. Am i wrong, or is that now limited with purchases?
I´m afraid this isn´t correct. I have many, many albums purchased through the AppStore, however most of them do not show any artist picture at all, just the placebo microphone placeholder. A shame really, and a huge step back from what it was before this update.
Sorry, should have said proposed solutions were posted against earlier iTunes s/w versions.
Just add * and artwork will return ...might work, although doubtful.
I was going to play and test it, but can't find 12.4 version as a download on Apple server as it's mis-labelled and points to 12.5.
12.4 shows the track/album artwork against all content, including purchases. Don't see any artist artwork... artist artwork only shows on the iDevice.
I note iOS 10 requires iTunes 12.5 - guess that means the days of sync'ing are over!
Jdstil, I find the explanation checks out for me, there of course is music I've bought from iTunes where there is no artist pic, but I think it just hasn't managed to find it. However the only artists with a picture showing are ones where I have bought tracks from iTunes, not other stores (boomkat, insound, direct from the label/bandcamp, etc) or on cd.
For instance, here it hasn't given an image for the Earlimart or Death in Vegas tracks I've bought, but the only one it has is a David Ford track from the store. Google music shows album art for all art, but I can't say the slightly random portraits either service finds really add anything, I would prefer not to see it at all, but it's the reams of placeholder icons that are really annoying. It's a shame, because the artist view was a great addition for me when it was introduced.
If anybody has itunes match, does that bring pictures back to the column?

Why would that be?
I'm having this problem too, except ALL my artwork has suddenly disappeared from the artist list, including iTunes purchases. Is this Apple's way of forcing us to use Apple Music?
Nope, I just hadn't waited long enough. Now it's showing some artist portraits, and everything else is that stupid tacky pink microphone. How much did Apple pay someone to come up with that icon?
This new update is absolutely atrocious.
I have Apple Music subscription and still got missing artist artwork.
All of my library consists of music ive bought on CD. They're legal copies, ive paid the record companies their money and Apple can't 'trust' me on that? I'm sorry, i am a bit mad about it. I loved the old artwork
I'm more interested in how the Music app or iTunes sources these image files and how the issue can be fixed. Whether it's as easy as right clicking and pressing 'get info' to manually add the artwork? I've tried that and all it does is replace all of the ALBUM artworks for that artist. I'm lost as to what to try next
IM in the same boat. iTunes messed up the music...again. Why they can't get this right.
or at least give us an update on what to do!
I have same issue too... It is so strange why they decided to change the way it used to be. But I've noticed a difference that on iOS10 devices it shows way more artists artworks than on Mac OS iTunes 12.5.1 and there is no relation to music purchased in Apple store or elsewhere. Somehow iTunes will not refresh artists artworks as iOS 10 does. May be Mac Os Sierra will help.
