Urgent: applications unresponsive

I downloaded an application yesterday, and after using it for a while I put the screen down causing my mac to sleep like I usually do. This time however, upon reopening I didn't find the Account sign-in screen, I find the application. The cursor could move, though everything else was frozen... After restarting it, not the downloaded application or any other application will respond when opened, even disk utility and App Store. 

Please, how do I fix this?
