How do i remove the activation lock

I bought an ipad 2 from a friend who hasn't used it in a long while. He forgot his password. When he tried to reset it, it asked for a recovery pin or something like that. He didn't know that neither. I don't want to bypass it i want to completely remove it.

He will either have to get his account's password reset so that he can type it in - if he had 2-step verification enabled on his account he will have to find his recovery key, he won't be able to reset its password without it : If you can't sign in with two-step verification using your Apple ID - Apple Support

 

Or, and if he was the original purchaser of the iPad (i.e. it wasn’t bought used), he could try going to an Apple Store (he should make a Genius Bar appointment if he does) or try contacting iTunes Support online (https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html) and see if they can remove the iPad from the account - they are likely to want to see proof of ownership before they might help e.g. original receipt with the serial number on it
