Cannot sync photos between a Mac and an iPad
Problems Syncing iPad
I have an iPad Air running iOS 11.0.2 with 128 GB storage. I also have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) with 12GB memory and 1TB storage, running macOS High Sierra 10.13.
I have been trying to sync my iPad with iPhoto photos using iTunes for more than a week now. Every time the sync fails, stopping after syncing (on average) 500 photos from my iPhoto library which contains more than 14,000 photos. I then get the message “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Now of course I have searched Communities with the “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.” question many times now. None of the fixes have worked for me.
I have tried everything suggested and anything else I can think of.
Here’s some of them:
Closed down iTunes, restarted the iMac, opened iTunes again, tried syncing once more, “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Turned off photo syncing in iTunes, synced the iPad with iTunes, photos on iPad didn’t all delete. Thought deleting photos and starting afresh might help.
Tried to sync photos again, sync failed after a short while, “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Found there was a new version of the Mac OS, High Sierra, so installed this and tried again: “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Did a factory reset of the iPad. Tried to sync again “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Read that iPads sometimes fail to sync due to there being too many other devices attached to the Mac, draining power. Ejected all HD drives etc. from the iMac, tried syncing again: “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Tried changing the “Copy photos from:” from iPhoto to a dummy folder with one photo in, to try and get the iPad to delete all photos from Photos app, and replace it with the one photo, an idea which was suggested in Communities. Didn’t work – the old photos still there (still well short of the full library on the iMac of course).
Tried changing the “Copy photos from:” from iPhoto library to the Photos library, as I had now migrated the iPhotos library to the Photos app. Tried syncing again but the sync stopped as before: “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
Noticed there was now an update for the iPad OS. Installed the update, tried syncing : “…cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.”
I’ve tried different USB ports and different USB leads. Makes no difference.
Trying to sync now one last time (I must have tried to sync the iPad photos over 40 times in the last week). The top message window of iTunes reads: Syncing Photos to “Bruce’s iPad” (Step 6 of 6), as always, Also “Copying photo 681 of 14,212” or whatever, and moves on quite rapidly to the next, then suddenly stops on 713! The bar at the bottom of the iTunes window (with the coloured blocks for videos, photos etc.) says the iPad has 14, 244 photos, yet my iPad says there are no more than 178!
I’m stumped! Is my iPad, which has worked perfectly up to now, and indeed syncs MP3s and all the other stuff it needs, really broken? Or is it some software issue? Is it the new macOS or the new iOS? Why is the only problem with photos?
By the way my iPhone 6s syncs perfectly with the iMac and iTunes, and has every single one of my photos.
Anybody any suggestions, or do I take my iPad down to my Apple dealer to get it fixed, if possible?
Sorry this is such a long post!
Cheers,
Bruce
