should i buy a new macbook air, or keep my 2012...
Hey, so I am looking at selling my MacBook Pro 2012. It is in ok condition, but I find it can be slow at times and I have had issues with it in the past. Should I sell it and purchase the MacBook Air for $1000 from Best Buy?We need more information to answer your question. Please do the following suggest and with the EtreCheck report we can make a valid suggestion.
I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
Etrecheck – System Information
I suggest that you attend to whatever is wrong with the MacBook Pro.
If you have 4GB RAM or less i would up the RAM and replace the HDD (if you have an HDD) with an SSD, then reinstall the OS and you will have a much faster mac* for far less than half the price BB is asking for a computer that has to be upgraded to a maximum of 8GB at the time of purchase (you CAN NOT upgrade an AIR after you purchase it) - thats' half of what you can put in an MBP for less than $150.00 in most cases. (16GB RAM 2012 MBP $129.99 macsales.com) - use the previous HHD for a backup drive or data - the OWC drives can be ordered with a kit to turn your internal HDD into an external USB drive so you can continue to use it.
I use OWC (Mac Sales) they are not the only distributors out there but if you go this route make sure your RAM was tested and verified to work in your model Mac. Kits with same form factor, voltage, timing and latency don't always work when you find something that looks like it fits for less but does not specify Mac compatible.
OWC SSD Upgrade Kits For MacBook Pro 2012
MacBook Pro RAM Upgrade Kits (2012 - 2015) I Warranty Included
*excluding the entry model 2012 MBP i5 2.5 Ivy Bridge vs the 2015 MacBook Air 2.2 gen 5 i7, both are dual core, they are close to same speed for most things but the 16GB RAM cap on the MBP and the 8GB RAM cap; and you need to get 8GB RAM built to buy, not later; on the Air. Also the turbo boost values can be misleading so take them with a grain of salt.
Hence the reason for my request for an EtreCheck report.
And hence I did not, already asked (as my lawyer would say)
