iTunes hanging up unable to open

I have my iMac set to automatically download updates. Today, I saw a window that indicated that I needed to install an update so I did. I presume it was for iTunes but do not know for sure. Now iTunes will not open. The dot appears under the iTunes icon on the tool bar but iTunes will not open. I have force quit iTunes several times, rebooted the computer, unplugged the computer, started in safe mode, tried a new guest user account ALL TO NO AVAIL. 

 

Can anyone suggest another way to get iTunes to respond and open?
