iOS 10.3.3 and Keynote: Can't stop capitalization

Using the latest version of Keynote for the iPad. No matter what settings I try, I cannot get Keynote from capitalizing all of my text. The relevant Apple support page says this:

Modify capitalization

  1. Select the text you want to change, then tap the Format button.
  2. Tap the More button in the Font section of the controls. If you don’t see text controls, tap Text or Cell.
  3. Tap a capitalization option.
    • None: The text is left as you entered it, with no changes.
    • All Caps: All text is capitalized at the same height.
    • Small Caps: All text is capitalized with larger capitals for uppercase letters.
    • Title Case: The first letter of each word is capitalized.

However, if I select some text and tap the "none" option, the first letter in the selected text remains capitalized.

I set the text style to "body", but still no joy. Everything I type in any Keynote text field always begins with a capital letter! In iPad General/Keyboard settings, I also have Auto-Capitalization and Atuo-Correct switched off.

In a highly stylized Keynote presentation such as the one with which I am working, there are many instances where sentences, phrases, captions, etc. should NOT begin with a capitalized word. There must be a way to fix this on the iPad.  TIA for your help!
