over writing old time machine backup

I am moving from a broken Imac 2010, to a Macbook 2015, both were running Sierra. I moved my data across by downloading from icloud. I installed apps manually. I want to start doing time machine backups again. The backup partition on my external disk is from the imac. What is the best way to start doing backups again

-keep using the existing time machine backups? (keeping in mind that the old backups have data and OS from an Imac running older version of sierra). Will TM just remove any files no longer there, and make it a valid backup?

OR

-format the old partition, and start a new time machine backup, to avoid any unwanted issues from the old computer? (a less efficient option, as all files have to be backed up again)
