mail won't get mail from IMAP

It just stopped being able to log in

gmail and yahoo mail both stopped working

POP mail works fine

tried putting the passwords back in the system preferences internet accounts panel, still won't connect. passwords work fine when i access the account via safari

i used the app store to verify i have the latest updates.

I restarted the mac, then it asked for the passwords, accepted them and all is working.

why didn't i do a restart right away!

Did you recently add two step authentication? If yes, you will need to get app-specific passwords.

Verify that both Yahoo and Gmail is set to work with IMAP.

In Gmail > Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.  Don't have Yahoo account for it's location.

Seems like the problem is the password box in mail preferences is gone on IMAP accounts, have to enter password in the internet preferences control panel, but nothing is accepted for Yahoo or gmail accounts.

I tried that before. Tried again and tried the app password thing, didn't work.

The IMP is enabled

Remove the accounts in Mail > Preferences > Accounts by clicking on the - sign. this takes you to System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Remove the account in Internet Accounts. Add back and see if it works now.
