possible to bypass the sd card write protection...

Hello.

Anyone knows a way to bypass / override the sd card write protection switch sensor of my macbook air?

My problem: The Sensor seems to be defective - it works sometimes, sometimes not. If I insert the card and push them more away from the screen, it tends to work better.

I actually NEVER use the hardware write protection on my SD Cards so it would be favorable to me, if I just could override the write protection sensor on the software side. Is this possible and if yes, how do I manage to do so?

I have a SD-Card permanently installed as memory extension which works fine but unfortunately the write-protection seems to drop in randomly even while the card is installed. It then doesn't show the lock in SD-Card finder windows but I get errors and can't do any operation that need write permission.

Thanks for your help!

By the way:

I already tried all sort of tricks on the hardware side (like having tape on the card and stuff...) doesn't help permanently, always had the same problems again...

Cheers, Sepoe

So to all Macbook Air 2010 13" owners having issues with write protection on SD-Cards: This is my (highly unofficial) solution to the problem. It kept bothering me so much that I decided to take the risk open and repair my Macbook Air.

The problem was, that SD-Cards were recognized as write protected even though the write protection-switch was in unlocked mode. And sometimes when at first the SD-Cards were recognized as read&write, in the middle of usage, they went to write protected, giving me also some issues with software running from SD-Cards.

First of all: Only follow my advice if you really know what you are doing and if you are familliar with basic repair works of electronic devices. Please be aware that you might damage your device or get unwanted results. Please read the full article before starting - certain side effects are at the end of this post.

What I did:

I unscrewed the back-cover of my Macbook Air and unmounted the right loudspeaker, to reach the side of the SD-Card drive, where I guessed the hardware-switch for write-protection must sit.

(A really good description, how this is done is shown here on iFixit )

The switch is in my opinion literally just two pieces of sheet metal, that make contact when pressed together (which should happen, when the SD-Cards protection switch is in «unlocked» mode). You can see the outer piece of metal - it is a really small stripe on the side of the SD-Card slot.

To make this contact permanent, I took a little screwdriver and just bent this outer stripe a little bit further in (by applying a slight amount of pressure on the stripe).

I didn't test if now every card is recognized as read&write (but I didn't ever use the locking switches anyways so this would be fine for me...).

Worked flawlessly for me eversince
