install old OS version on an external drive

When I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I couldn't use certain softwares:

-Toast Titanium 7.1.3 (I was very happy with that software...and later versions are crap based on reviews everywhere.)

-Nikon Scan 4 and Nikon View 6 which I use for my Nikon Film scanner (slides, etc).

But I just realized something:

I still have the dmg/disk image of Snow Leopard  (Mac OSX Update Combo 10.6.8) in a folder in my Application folder.

So I can install that on my external drive and be able to use again these 3 softwares. Right?

That seems to easy. Don't I need stuff that are in basic/technical folders like System, Library, Users, Preferences, etc?

Also I guess I will need some partition because everything in my HD computer (with Mountain Lion) has been carbon copy cloned to the external drive.

I have an external drive OWC Mercury Elite Pro (Firewire 800/USB 3.0/eSATA) 1 TB and Mountain Lion.

No. While you can install Snow Leopard, you need to do so from a DVD instead of the updater.
