Contacts from my phone do not sync to iCloud

I've tried everything I can find on the Web about this but nothing is working. I have a gmail email account, and I have contacts on my phone. But why does nothing I try get them to sync to iCloud? I've setup iCloud, set my iCloud account is my default for contacts, in set gmail account to show as the Group for the contacts, turned Contacts on and off in iCloud settings asking it to merge, restarted my phone... you name it.. nothing gets it to sync :-(.  What do I do to get my Contacts on my phone to sync to iCloud?
