Print Driver

I've never had an issue before since Apple operating systems come with a ton of print drives, but with new printer, I've had to download and install the print drive.  From what I've read, if drive is not preinstalled, Apple should automatically download a driver in software update.  It's an HP Laserjet Pro M501dn.  Our desktops are running macOS Sierra, 10.12.6.  Any suggestions?
