ignore file extension by application
If I remember correctly, a few years ago macOS worked as any unix/linux-based system. The extension of the file didn't have much weight on the type of the file and the applications would actually look at the header of the file to really identify the file type. For instance, if I create a text file with some other extension than .txt (or whatever other text file extension are out there), it won't open with the text editor. It's just like in Windows. It becomes an anonymous file.
I find it really annoying and I think it just caters to dumb users who're really not preoccupied with such "abysmal" details of the OS. Is there any way I can return to the way it used to behave?
Thanks
Hi there ... the default application to open certain kind of files exists since the beginning and of course you can change, by clicking the file and then cmd-I and edit the default app "Open With" as showed below (sorry in German):
A proper UNIX system, never had the fork-tailed Finder perched on its shoulders — which uses the System Launch Services database to determine default file types, and associated applications by extension, or UTI (e.g. com.apple.iWork.Pages). Once you are in the Terminal, then you are free of Finder, and back to the time honored, “magic” database determination of the file type.
Let's just take this particular example of a simple text file: I know for certain that I didn't need any extensions before in order for the operating system to be able to preview or open the file with a text editor. Now, if I select the respective file (that, for instance, has no extension) and I press space, it just shows an unidentified file.
So I'm guessing there's no solution. Apps (at least to some extent - let's say images and text) simply cannot see what's inside the file without the extension.
@getanger I know for sure that you didn't read what I actually wrote. This is a recurring behaviour on this forum, I see that now
