How do I approve a new iphone from a different ...

My new iPhone 7 asked me to Update settings.  It requested my (encrypted) password for an old IPad which I do not remember having not used it.  It sends me to "another device to approve my iPhone".  How should I go about this? I have been stuck for 2 days with this problem . Thank you for your help.
