Message preview window not expanding in apple mail
Hello,
I have been using apple mail classic layout for ever including in my new MacBook Pro OS 10.12.6.
For the past few days and no apparent reason or voluntary change on my part, the message preview suddenly disappeared!... It only displays the message list.
I can increase/decrease the window size from the lower right corner... and increase or decrease the number of messages displayed by pulling the little arrow up or down from the middle dot at the bottom, but the up arrow to separate and resize the message pane from the preview pane from the same dot does not work anymore.
The dot changes to this up arrow on a line but I cannot pull it up or down.
I tried to quit mail and restart. And also switch off the classic view but it still does not work...
Very annoying to have to open each email in a separate window!...
Any suggestion?...
Thank you,
Veronique
Hi Veronique
You need to drag that separator with the middle dot up, way up, much more than you have been doing. There will be no visual confirmation of that action until you drag it more than halfway to the opposite side of that Mail window.

Wow!... Great... It worked... I had no idea I dragged it too far down.
Thank you so much, John!...
You did nothing wrong. That particular lack of visual feedback has been a Mail annoyance for so long I doubt it will ever be fixed.
Apple's own Human Interface Guidelines used to include the following passage:
Instantly acknowledge the user’s commands and input. Users expect to receive some type of feedback every time they interact with your app. In macOS, buttons respond visually when users click them, and the pointer changes appropriately as users move it over different controls and areas. Similarly, if a command can’t be carried out, users want to know why it can’t and what they can do instead. The quicker you provide feedback for the user’s interactions, the more responsive your app appears.
They have now removed that passage from their updated "Providing User Feedback" Developer page. It was replaced with an egregiously grammatically incorrect passage, one so nauseatingly bad it would be distasteful to quote it on this site (yes I asked them to fix that too).
Perhaps they found it easier to remove that Guideline than to fix Mail.
Visual feedback from moving / clicking / dragging is obviously fundamental to macOS, but the way things are going is that iOS doesn't do something, neither will macOS, and there is no equivalent action in iOS's Mail app.
