MBP mid 2012 unable to install OS

Hi!

I'm currently trying to fix my girlfriend's MBP mid 2012. The computer has an SSD installed.

The computer was running very slow out of nowhere.

I checked the SSD using BlackMagic speedtest, showing consistently 100mB read and 500mB write. The read-speed seems very low, it is however consistent.

I checked the RAM (8GB is installed, shows up fine).

In activity monitor the CPU spiked every 10-20 secs and the computer would freeze with the beach ball.

I tried reinstalling Sierra from an USB, but got "no native mechanism to verify install info.plist", and the computer would sit for 7 hours doing nothing. I tried to fix the date using both manual date and the automatic date in Terminal.

Then i tried installing High Sierra Beta from an USB, but got "failed payload signature check" after several hours, with just 11 seconds remaining of the installation.

Right now I'm thinking it could be either:

- SSD failure. I can check another HDD tomorrow.

- SATA cable failure. Can't check, since i don't have a spare.

- CPU failure. Can't check, for obvious reasons.

Do you guys have any suggestions what i might do to proceed? I'm thinking:

- Try another HDD.

- Maybe try a fresh Linux install, just in case the Sierra and High Sierra Betas are bad copies (downloaded from app store though..)

- Hand it in - this seems like an expensive solution though.

Hope you will help me,

Best Regards,

Magnus

EDIT: I also tried command+alt+R for network recovery. The earth icon freezes and sits for many hours not spinning.

Hi,

You could try playing trial and error with various parts like the SSD or SATA cable, but I would first bring the Mac to an Apple Store “genius” bar for a free diagnosis: https://support.apple.com/contact

Hi tjk.

Thank you for your reply. There are, unfortunately, no Apple Stores in Copenhagen. But I guess the best solution is to bring it to some 3rd party repair center.

Thank you.

Please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

When you run Etrecheck run it on the Sierra system, not High Sierra.

Hi Macjac.

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately i wiped the SSD in order to install a fresh Sierra when the computer got slow. Now it is unable to install an OS (Sierra nor High Sierra), and as such I can't run EtreCheck inside Sierra.

Perhaps I can make a bootable EtreCheck or some other bootable diagnostic tool? Do you know any?

Etrecheck needs an OS to run. The only diagnostic tool available is AHT.

How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support

When i press D on startup, globe appears, i connect to Wifi, and then get error -2002D. Doesn't seem like what you linked.

I'm not sure why you are getting that error, assuming you are connected to wi-fi. However, you're not missing a lot. The Hardware Test is not the most sensitive. Apple has a lot more comprehensive tests that they run in the stores.

If possible try doing a fresh install of Sierra onto a new disk and booting from that.

Wifi-pass should be good.

I'll try switching the SSD with a HDD from my desktop tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes. Hopefully it's just a bad SSD and not the SATA-cable.

OK, good luck.

Ok, i tried pulling out a HDD from my windows rig (actually, it's the harddisk from the mac, before I installed an SSD in the mac).

I cannot erase the disk - i get "Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed" (error -69825).

This happens both using Disk Utility and erasing in Terminal.

Any clue what might be going on?
On various forums the problem seems to happen when you change the optical drive for an HDD. But the optical is unchanged in this machine.

then get error -2002D.

those errors indicate that your Wi-Fi is inadequate for automatic operation in Internet Recovery. Problems may include:

Hidden Network-name

Use of PPPoE on the mac (on your Router is fine)

use of a login-page before you can get a connection

Use of a proxy or certificate before you can get a connection

Use of Manual IP address rather than good old DHCP

.

The Mac prohibits "secure Erase" of an SSD because on some drives, that can cause damage.

Just use regular erase, or skip the erase step entirely and go straight to Partition.

Thank you Grant.
How does one use regular erase?
I used the "erase" button in Disk Utility and the command "diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ {name} {identifier}" in Terminal.

If it helps anything using diskutil list:

disk0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1GB

disk0s1: Microsoft Reserved 16.8MB

disk0s2: Microsoft Basic Data 500.1GB

EDIT: I cannot partition the disk, because it has already used 500GB.

The Disk Utility commands with their Graphical User Interface are preferable, because the Terminal commands are completely unforgiving.

To deal with the entire drive, be certain to select the drive by its most out-dented "hardware-name"

"regular" erase is the use of Erase without specifying (security erase) options.

Erase in not always needed, you can often go straight to Partition as long as you specify one partition, and do not accept "as currently partitioned".

My anecdote: I have been surprised that after it refused to do certain operations, such as erasing a drive with data on it, simply asking for the same thing again sometimes seemed to provide success. (your mileage may vary).
