Wireless Wi
Hi All,
So I'd been trying to get automatic wireless wi-fi sync working with my iPhone 7 and iTunes. I've read a number of articles and posts and searched many a forum regarding the subject and basically, while I can get a manual wireless wi-fi sync, I cannot get it working automatically; that is, when plugged in and charging on my home network.
I think I can narrow this down to one question: does the iTunes PC need to be a WIRELESS PC? The PC that iTunes resides on is on 24/7, does not go to sleep, autostarts Windows and iTunes after a Windows update, and works flawlessly if I initiate a "Sync Now" from my device (while on my home network, of course) but it is wired to the network via ethernet cable.
I just cannot get the automatic part, where phone is plugged in and charging, to happen on it's own (e.g. overnight). I've tried many suggestions over the months, too much to post here but really comes down to that one question. As mentioned above, currently, the iTunes PC is connected via ethernet cable to the network. If automatic wireless wi-fi sync will NEVER work 'automatically', then I can give up, knowing I've done all I can. If it CAN be done, then I'll redouble my efforts and post with more information.
Thank you.
It doesn't matter that your PC is connected via a cable. As long as iTunes has the Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi checked, it will sync over the network. Also, make sure under Edit > Preferences > Devices, Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically is unchecked.
Just to be clear, according to the "Set iTunes to sync your iOS device over Wi-Fi" section in:
Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes using Wi-Fi - Apple Support
you must initially set-up WI-FI syncing using the USB cable. Did you do that?
Thank you. Many articles were unclear on the wired vs. unwired part. I shall redouble my efforts to solve this. I could fully understand if the manual wireless wi-fi sync didn't work - then of course the automatic wireless wi-fi sync wouldn't work either; but it's puzzling that the manual works but the auto doesn't (manual has worked since Sep/16).
I'll try to put something together as to what I've done/tried (and try to keep it brief, yet include as much as I can).
Just make sure when your iPhone is plugged into iTunes, to verify the Sync over Wi-Fi box is checked AND make sure that you aren't preventing auto sync.
Personally, I turned off syncing over wifi because it was random as all get out and took forever.
Thanks. Yes, I did follow that step, including checking and unchecking each option with full iTunes shutdowns and startups between each, and as recent as yesterday.
There are many helpful articles/blogs/posts out there regarding wireless wi-fi sync, but most of them are several years old and coincide with iOS 6 and the corresponding iTunes version when the feature was introduced. Almost all articles do mention doing the first sync via cable, unchecking Automatically sync, unchecking Prevent iPods, iPhones, etc., checking firewalls for port blockage, and issuing static IP's to the iPhone (which I have done, no harm). Numerous restarts of device, iTunes, iTunes PC, router, forgetting networks, readding, and such over the months. Usually every couple of weeks or so, I'll start from scratch to get this working.
It's not frustrating at all, just a mystery I wouldn't mind solving. Walking in the door after work (or even doing from outside) and clicking Sync Now from the device isn't the end of the world (I add new songs from work, uploading them to the cloud, I use iTFW (iTunes Folder Watch) to watch for changes and add new songs automatically to my iTunes library and my new songs playlist). It works quite slick if I do say so myself, and syncing also updates my ratings and number of plays in both directions.
I'd just like to get that "last piece" working for the satisfaction. Thanks again, all.
Oh...! What is the making sure I am not preventing auto-sync about, please? I just remoted in to my iTunes PC and am not sure where to look for that.
Also, here are my two key screens inquired about so far (if I can figure uploading screenshots out).
For basically the same reasons as cjhan50 mentioned, I don't use WI-FI syncing myself either. In fact, I prefer manual syncing even using the USB/Lightning cable. But that's just me.
Perhaps you really do need a WI-FI card in your PC to get it to work. I don't know the answer to that question. If you are really curious, try the Contact Apple Support link at the bottom of the article I cited in my first answer.
For auto-syncing options, see steps 3, 4, & 5 in:
iTunes for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Those are the correct settings. I wish I had the magic elixir . That's all I did to have my iPhone auto sync. But as I mentioned, I stopped using wifi some time ago.
The fact that you can sync via wifi manually would indicate that your router/network setting are fine. And, since nothing that I know of has changed since syncing over wifi was first introduced, I, like you, would expect most articles to be in the time frame of that introduction.
If I run across anything that might help, I'll reply back.
I've reviewed steps 3, 4 and 5 and -- for Music, I do have 'Entire Music Library' selected via radio button, rather than Selected Playlists, etc., I'll give that a try tonight since everything is selected anyways. Intuitively it seems the same thing (entire vs all selected), but you never know. Definitely I had not tried that.
Step 5's "Open iTunes when this device is connected". This tells me that the knowledge article is at least several generations of iTunes behind/outdated, because I have never seen that setting since my first version of iTunes in Sep/16 (12.5.1.21, or the iOS 10 version) -- definitely not in my Summary section now (I'm currently on 12.5.5.5).
Again, thanks everyone -- much appreciated.
Just as a follow up to my initial post (which I realize was six months ago), I believe that I have finally got this working (not perfect but to my satisfaction at least). In some ways, it was 'better' before (sync was NEVER automatic but I could always manually sync wirelessly), but in other ways, it is 'better' now (sometimes I can manually sync but as often as not, my iTunes PC "was not available", however, it does sync wirelessly, on it's own [when on wi-fi and charging of course], several times per day). I guess it's a matter of preference which of the two scenarios is better but I'll pass on how I got auto syncing to work.
First, the many numerous articles, posts and blogs out there were all helpful in the procedures to set up wi-fi sync with iTunes (I'm going to skip all that, because as I mentioned in my initial post, manually initiated wireless sync had always worked, so the BASIC workings were in place, otherwise (IMHO), I wouldn't be able to manually wi-fi sync).
I resigned myself to manual sync (after all, not the end of the world since I'd still be cable-free). However, I had to replace my aging router / bridge combo with a new router / switch combo and suddenly found that my iTunes PC was NEVER available; so I had to sync using cable and that wouldn't do! So I had to revisit this.
In a nutshell (as I am sure everyone is bored by now), I had to do two things that I hadn't before: 1) was open the router's firewall for TCP 3689, UDP 5353 and TCP/UDP 123. There's a few articles out there on ports that Apple used for various functions but these seemed to be more specific for wireless sync. In itself, opening these ports didn't seem to do anything but I left it that way. 2) Next, I read an article post that stated that Windows firewall (if running Windows, of course) had to also be opened to allow SyncServer.exe ("SyncServer.exe is an executable file that belongs to Apple Mobile Device Support, a program that is required to synchronize devices through iTunes."). So I looked through my Control Panel / Security settings and found that I didn't have it opened. I was dubious that this was going to make any difference, but when I looked at my phone (not connnected by cable), the Sync Now was blue - EUREKA!
The Eureka was short-lived though, as I checked throughout the day (without leaving the house or wi-fi converage) and it was usually grey but sometimes blue. The next day, I looked and it was currently blue but the timestamp on the last sync was sometime overnight (when I'd be charging while asleep). That, almost a year later, was my first true wireless sync with iTunes that was not initiated manually.or by cable. Over the next few days, I would periodically check my device and it'd be grey or blue (no pattern that I could see) as I went about my business, both home and out and about. This is the 5th day and it has synced wirelessly, automatically at least once per day (I say at least once per day because I can't specifically tell when the previous to the previous sync was).
So I'm satisfied with that. Not perfect, but I'll take it.
Edit/Add: just to add one thing - many articles/blogs/posts state that both the iPhone/iPod and the device that iTunes is running on must be on the same WIRELESS network and not just on the same network (i.e. they specifically state that the iTunes PC can't be wired and the iPhone/iPod be on Wi-Fi). My PC that iTunes is running on is wired and on 24/7 (it's my streaming PC) and definitely has no wireless capabilities.
