Apple Watch will not charge

I have an Apple Watch series 1 that I have not used for a while as I moved onto a series 2. I want to give this watch to my friend so I got it out of it's box and put it on to charge so I could check it is all working right before I give it to her. I have had it on charge for one day and a night and still I get the same. The cable charging icon with the green lightening bolt, which just keeps flashing while it is connected to the charger. I have tried two different chargers same thing. I have tried to hard reset but I can't due to no power, and also tried pressing and holding the power button. In short I have tried all the suggestions listed on apple support.

Does the flashing mean it IS charging? Or is the battery totally dead as I haven't used it in a few months? Its only a year old so cannot believe the battery would be totally dead already!

Thanks!

Hi

Follow the instructions here, including contacting Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), making a Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider if necessary:

Thanks for this! I have unfortunately tried all of these things and none have worked I live in NZ so we don't have an Apple Store (which is a sore point with all us apple lovers here!) but I will try and service provider. If anyone else out there has experienced the same thing with their watch please reply! Thanks.

the watch might need to be left on charge longer than usuall as it probably might have discharged beyond the reserve point

I've tried this approach but hasn't helped. Neither did bringing the watch to Apple Store. They said they need to send it for repairs. If it's a battery problem, it's a US$80 charge. If not, they'll give me a call. This is a known problem (batteries expanding etc.) so I wonder about their response...

Same thing here.  I'm in Brazil, no apple store...

Same here...bought the series 2, placed series 1 in a drawer for a year.  Just pulled it out and placed on charger and all I get is a green flashing bolt.  I'm really ******...evidently, this appears from the comments I am reading to be a known issue.  If one does not keep their watch charged regularly, the watch becomes non-chargeable.  That sounds like a rip off to me!  No. 1, this should not be occurring.  No. 2, if it is (which is certainly appears to be the case) Apple should let consumers know when they buy a new watch that they need to continue to charge their old watch if they don't want the watch to stop charging when they try next after some time passes.  A little heads up would be greatly appreciated!  Now I'm looking at an $80 + tax service fee for a new battery, which doesn't make much sense if I was planning on selling the watch given the current value.

Hi

When storing an Apple Watch long term, Apple advises that you should:

  • Charge your Apple Watch to 50%.
    • If stored for a long time with the battery initially fully charged, it may lose some capacity, shortening the battery life.
    • If stored when the battery is initially fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, leaving it unable to hold a charge.
  • Turn your Apple Watch off.
  • Store it in a cool, moisture-free environment with a temperature lower than 32° C (90° F).
  • If storing your Apple Watch for longer than six months, charge it to 50% every six months.
  • Upon removal from storage, if the battery has fallen below a certain level, you may need to charge it for 20 minutes before the watch can be used.

More information (including under "Store it half-charged when you store it long term"):
