External Superdrive/USB issues

I have a 2015 Macbook air with no cd/dvd reader.

I purchased an Apple Superdrive and am having issues.  When I connect it into either of the USB sockets, there is a slight "whir" and then nothing and it will not accept the cd/dvd.

If I connect to the Macbook and restart or close down and start up, the superdrive bursts into life and I can copy files from cd/dvds to the Macbook.  I can eject and put further cds/dvds in.  If I disconnect the superdrive and plug it in again, I'm back to the point above.

When I connect my IPhone to either USB port, the device is recognised instantly and I can update my music with no problem. The superdrive appears to work normally, but only if it is attached at startup. Also, I have taken one superdrive back to the store and had it replaced because of these issues, so do not think it is the superdrive as such and although I am "techie", I am not that techie and could do with a hand.

Any thoughts before I go along to those nice people at the local(ish) Apple store and ask them?

Thanks

Hi there, start to have a look here: Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support

Probably before to do anything else, I would do this: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Hi Staffs,

Try the following to isolate the issue.

  • Connect your USB SuperDrive to another computer.
  • Connect a different USB SuperDrive to your computer.
  • Create an external Mac startup disk, boot to it, and see if the issue persists.

The Genius Bar can definitely provide assistance with determining the issue. See the following page to setup a reservation.

All the best.
