Should I upgrade to macOS Sierra?

I have a mid 2012 13" i7 MacBook Pro running El Capitan and I'm wondering if upgrading would bring any improvements in performance. Is there a chance that it might slow my MacBook down? And I can only see macOS High Sierra in the App Store, does that mean there is no way I can get macOS Sierra from Apple?

Also, I know someone who has a 2011 MacBook Pro i5, is it recommended for them to upgrade?

Your Mac is capable of running High Sierra. Sierra is no longer available from the AppStore, so High Sierra is your only upgrade route. Same is true of the 2011 MBP assuming it is running Mountain Lion or later.

Generally speaking, you should always upgrade to the latest possible system that you meet the specs for, as long as you have no “must have” apps that do not meet the specs. Upgrades and updates contain important security improvements plus additional features.

I do. I did.
