Macbook Keyboard unresponsive, is it liquid dam...

So recently my MacBook Pro Retina (Early 2015)'s keyboard and trackpad have been intermittently unresponsive. Sometimes they work fine, other times I get absolutely no response. It's only started happening in the past fortnight, prior to this I had no problems. Took it to the genuis bar last week and they said it was £9 for a trackpad wiring replacement, excellent I thought. Received a lovely call today whilst on my lunch break explaining that they've found liquid damage and it'll be £350 to replace the logic board. Okay I admit I haven't been a perfect owner and about a year ago I accidentally spilled coca-cola on my keyboard It was a whole year ago and I thought I'd got away with it!! Could the damage really be caused by something that happened so long ago? Is there any way I can avoid this £350 fee, maybe fix it myself? I'm a student and whilst I can afford the fee if need be, I'd realllllly rather not. I'm really not sure what to do in this situation, Ive told them not to bother with the repair and that I'll come collect it soon, but I can't  live with this problem forever and could it possibly get worse?
