iMac shift key not working

i have an iMac with wired keyboard. yesterday the shift key would not work [no capitals etc]. today the first few capitals worked as normal and now not working again. i recently updated the os to the latest version. can anyone help please.

Wow. Thanks for such a fast response. `you are right, the keyboard has the same fault on my Macbook so obviously the keyboard is at fault. I am using a mac wired keyboard  (the supplied wireless one doesn't have a separate numeric section) and I am not sure about the best way to clean it. Any suggestions?

It works. Using the iMac keyboard after a quick clean with a very slightly damp cloth, and everything is working fine. i nearly dashed out to buy a new keyboard so you definitely saved me some of my hard earned as well. Many thanks.

Just use a soft cloth, slightly dampened with water. Pull the key up as much as possible and clean around it. You might also try a Q-tip.
