AirPods not connecting to new Apple Watch

Getting my AirPods to connect to the new Apple Watch is proving to be frustrating. They connect first attempt 5% of the time and all other attempts end with the message, "Connection Failed, make sure AirPods are turned on and in range." They are fully charged and next to the watch which is also fully charged. I even tried putting my iPhone in airplane mode to see if that was the problem. They will eventually connect after about 15 minutes of trying. I am finding this so frustrating, I will probably return the watch.
