Cannot get iOs Mail on wifi

We are on a Danube River cruise. The ship provides Wifi and I can get online (evidence here). However iCloud mail and a few apps (e.g., Box, which I'm using for photo backup) will not go online. I can get other mail accounts on iPad (& iPhone) Mail (gmail, our own server, etc.).

The cruise's technical person said this may be because the ship's Wifi is from the Netherlands and Cloud servers that care detect that we are physically in Germany find this suspicious and refuse the connection. They will try again today to help me (am I really the only person on board who is traveling with only iOS devices??)

Any ideas of something I can tweak on my own in Settings?

Have you tried accessing the mail from a computer?  I'm not sure if the ship's wifi may be blocking the POP/SMTP ports.
