Time Machine saying that my 2tb external hd doe...

I updated my 2012 Macbook Pro and then tried to back up my My Passport 2TB (newly FULLY erased) external drive but every time I start the backup, after about 45 minutes of "Preparing to back up" I get the message that there is not enough room on the hard drive. What? I have 2TBs?? Can anyone help me out?
