Am I screwed? Is there no chance to backup?

iMac not sure how old but hard drive is one or two years old. El Capitain 10.11 I think is the latest I put on it .Turns on/off. Had green, black, white, pink screens. Do not enter symbol on white screen, your computer restarted because of a problem screen. Did safe mode, utility disk, reset nvram, unplugged for hours... finally turned on and said something had to be deleted from new backup drive I bought, crashed when pressing erase. Got turned on again this morn and says disk inserted is not readable. Hoping I don't lose everything.

Your "chance to backup" was before it crashed... Not knowing what, exactly, is failing, it's impossible for us to say if you'll be able to recover anything at all from the internal drive at this point.
