Migrating Mac Mail accounts to Mobile Devices

Back in the elder days, if you changed or added an account to your Mac Mail on your desktop, it would automatically sync to your mobile devices, adding those same accounts.  So one did not have to go through creating new mail accounts on everything.  Doesn't seem to do it anymore.  What am I missing?

Were you also syncing your devices through iTunes at the time? Mail settings can by synced via iTunes over USB and Wi-Fi if configured properly.

That's what I had been trying to do.  The new email accounts aren't being recreated on the mobile devices.
