Migration assistant not finding time machine

Hi all.

Just bought a new MacBook Pro and am trying to use migration assistant with the time machine hard drive to transfer data. Although the new mac recognizes the time machine in Finder, it does not find it when I tell migration assistant to use it for transferring data. Suggestions?

The reason I am not transferring directly from my old Mac is that I did that a month ago with a new mabook pro, but we could never get the battery to show more than 3 hours time; so they gave me another macpro instead and my data for the past month is on Time Machine.

Thanks.

Are you sure the TM drive doesn't appear?  It should have a yellow or green icon, and the name of the computer and HD that was backed-up, not the one containing the backups.

If the drive isn't recognized, try repairing it per #A5 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Your best bet is to use Setup Assistant instead of Migration Assistant, to avoid some problems.  If Migration Assistant does recognize the backups, start over with the green "Second Chance" box here:  Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.

Hi. I tried setup assistant first; same thing. The little whieel just spins round and round. TM shows up in Finder in the new computer; but now when migration asst or setup asst is looking for the disk. I did a disk repair and it came back fine.

What does show up in the Migration Assistant window (can you post a screenshot)?

Just the spinning wheel as it searches for the disc.

So this window is empty?

Same problem here, anyone have a solution?

I actually have to TM backups.

I stopped using  the older one two months ago as it got full, but migration assistant finds this backup.

The one i last used does not appear on migration assistant... Is there anything i can do?

Did anyone find a solution ? I have the same problem. The Timemachine drive will show up fine in finder but not in Migration assistant. The wheel keeps spinning and nothing shows up.

OK, found it in another tread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2352932?start=0&tstart=0). It was as simple as this:

"Open the external drive in finder. Do you see a backups.backupdb folder or do you see a sparse bundle?

if it's a sparse bundle double-click on it to mount it and try MA again. "

Thank you V.K. !

"Open the external drive in finder. Do you see a backups.backupdb folder"

Yeah.  The sparse bundle is the timemachine backup on another Mac.  Finder sees and allows me inside the .backupdb folder (which is the desired backup).  Migration Assistand doesn't see the mounted drive at all.  Disk Utility sees it, Finder sees it...

Anyone else?

Do you mean you were backing-up two Macs to the same partiiton on that Mac, one directly, and one via your network?  And the backups you want are from the Mac that was backed-up directly?

If so, Repair the backups per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

If you want the backups in the sparse bundle, double-click it to mount it.  That may take a few moments.  If it doesn't open (you may get a message about "no mountable file systems"), repair it per the same article.

Okay, here's what happened...

And by the way, I was backing up one machine directly and another via the network; nothing needed repair.

I went back to Migration Assistant and continued through even though the the USB TB drive did not show.  On the next screen the users that had been backed up were represented as though the disk was recognized.  I migrated all the contents and it appears to have gone through successfully.

I confirmed the fact it was seeing the correct data by expanding the Users, demonstrating that Migration Assistant was pulling from the correct data file.  So it seems the application works, just doesn't represent what it's doing from the outset.

So again, just keep hitting continue EVEN THOUGH THE BACKUP DISK IS NOT SHOWN.

Good luck to all.

Thanks!  Mounting the sparse bundle works to show it in Migration Assistant in MacOS High Sierra (2017).  Advice still current.
