Good afternoon Dusty3159,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are having issues with the Mail application on your MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan.

Apple Mail abruptly closes about 70% of the time when I hit "reply" to an email

Is this happing in one specific email account, or in several email accounts?  How long has this been going on?

Before we begin troubleshooting, I'd like to confirm that you have your computer backed up with Time Machine.

How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Lets try some preliminary troubleshooting steps:

  1. If you have the Mail application open, quit the application and restart your computer.  This will reinitialize your connection to the internet.
  2. In the Menu bar, click Mail > Preferences, and then click on the Accounts tab.
  3. Select one mail account on the left, and remove the checkmark from "Enable this account" on the right
  4. Repeat the process with each account
  5. Close Preferences and Quit the Mail application.
  6. Now, open the Mail application, go back into Preferences and enable only the first email account.
  7. Wait until all of the messages for that account have downloaded and you no longer see "Checking for Mail" for that account.
  8. Repeat the steps, enabling only one email account at a time, and giving each one time to download all of its messages to your computer before continuing to the next.
  9. Quit the Mail application.
  10. Relaunch Mail holding down the Shift key so that the application opens without any message selected.
  11. Scan your mailboxes for any messages who's sender you do not recognize, right-click and delete those message from the message list without opening them.
  12. Now, reply to a message and see if the issue persists.  If it does, then follow the steps in the resource below:

If Mail on your Mac keeps trying to upgrade your email library

Dusty3159, if you are still having issues with Mail after trying these steps, please reply to this thread with any additional information that you can, including error messages you may encounter, and we'll investigate this further with you.

Take care.
