2011MBP target disc to 2016MB

2011 MBP died.  I hadn't heard of all the problems with them, until it was too late.  No hope of repair (I've decided against the oven trick).  I am wanting to get data of the HD.  I have started 2011MBP in target disc mode and the thunderbolt and fire wire icons have appeared.  I have connected it to my new 2016 MacBook with a usb-c to thunderbolt adapter and a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable, linked together.  The HD is not showing up on the new Mac.  I've tried it with all permutations of starting/connecting one before the other, but no joy.  Please help! images of Mac specs and cable I'm using below.

Hi,

The following isn't totally definitive, but it sounds like you have you use USB:

Target disk mode on MacBook with USB-C port

MacBook (12-inch, Retina, Early 2015) and later support USB target disk mode using the following USB-C cables to transfer data:

  • USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 USB-C Cable (USB-C to USB-C): Use this cable to share files between a MacBook with a USB-C port and another MacBook with a USB-C port.
  • USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 USB-A to USB-C Cable: Use this cable to share files between a Mac with USB-A port(s) and a MacBook with a USB-C port.

These cables aren't currently available from Apple. The USB-C Charge Cable (2m) that came with your MacBook doesn't support target disk mode.

Ah ok.  I presumed I had to use firewire or thunderbolt.  So I plug it into the old normal USB port of the old Mac.  Hope this works. I'll have to order that cable. thanks.

I was under the same impression about FW and Thunderbolt TDM too. Oh well.

Your understanding is mine also.

The only thing I wonder about, is that it states a USB 3 or 3.1 cable, but then it says it works with "a Mac with USB-A port(s)." It doesn't specify USB 3. (Your MBP only has USB 2.) I suspect this is just an ambiguous explanation, enough so that I'd buy the cable and give it a try, unless you hear from another source that it doesn't work.
