Upon startup (macbook pro), recently started lo...

In the past 2-3 weeks, for some reason when I power up my Macbook Pro after shutting it down for the night, it reloads all the applications I was using last.  It never did this before, and I can't seem to find anything on that in the settings.

For a long while, I've had this same problem but only with Mail.  That was annoying, but I can deal with it.  Why did it all of a sudden change, and how can I disable that from happening?  Mail and all.

I'm sure I can do things like "Close" the applications before shutting down, but why can't I just shut down the computer like I used to without it reloading everything?

When you shut down, uncheck the box in this dialog:

thank you!  I knew it had to be something simple, but I never checked that box in the first place, unless I did it accidentally.

You're welcome.

do you know anything about why Mail always opens?  It opens on startup and when it comes back from sleep.

It opens on startup even when that box is unchecked?

If you go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > [your user] > Login Items, is Mail listed? If so, remove it from there.

yes, it opens both on startup and waking from sleep.

I checked the settings you mentioned, it is not in the list of login items.  I've looked into this before and that was something I checked.

I'm not sure on this one, so I'll put out a call for another user to help you.
