iOS 9: App Store requires password for free dow...
Since updating to iOS 9, I get prompted to enter my iTunes password to update apps or download free apps. I have it set to not require passwords for free apps, and I am logged into the App Store
I have tried logging out and back in a number of times, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Does anyone else have this issue?
I had the same exact problem (on my 5c) and this fixed it for me.
Settings... General... Reset... Reset all settings
Then...
General... Restrictions...
ITunes Store "Enabled"
Installing Apps "Enabled"
Deleting Apps "Enabled"
In-App Purchases "Disabled"
General... Restrictions... Password Settings...
... Purchases & In-App Purchases...
Required after 15 Minutes CHECKED
... Free Downloads...
Require Password "ENABLED"
Then I went to App Store updates and updated all my apps (yes, I did have to enter my password this one time)
About an hour or so later there were a few new app updates, I pressed "update all" and they updated without me needing to enter my password !!
Out of curiosity I then went back into General... Restrictions... Password Settings... and nothing was checked
Free Downloads... Require Password is enabled but greyed out (and I can't change it)
I don't know if it was the settings, the reset, or both that worked for me (or if this will work for you) but it's worth trying... just don't forget to re-enable/login into your wi-fi after you "reset all settings" so you don't use up data.
Have you tried cancelling the message (if you can) and try downloading without using the password?
Just tried this, but it cancels and doesn't download. It was working fine in 8.4.1.
What happens when you enter your iTunes password when prompted?
It will download the app or update as expected. I get prompted with this pop up every time:
However, I am already signed into iTunes/App Store:
As shown in my previous screenshot, my settings are to allow free downloads without a password. I didn't change anything other than to upgrade to iOS 9. Is this a bug or am I the only one with this issue?
There are a couple of possibilities. You may not have a valid form of payment in the iTunes store. One is required even for free downloads. It's also possible that the "free" app has in-app purchases as an option. In this case it isn't really a "free" app, and you will be prompted for your password.
Try a forced restart. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Something else to try is to go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. No data is lost, but you will have to enter all of your device's settings again. That includes WiFi passwords. This action returns the iPad's settings to default, out of the box condition. The iPad will also reboot on its own.
Thanks, I just made sure my credit card is up to date, but that didn't seem to make a difference. I've tried several apps/updates, all with the same results.
I've already tried restarting. Not worth wiping all my settings over.
Do the apps you are downloading have in-app purchase options?
Not necessarily. Don't think that's the issue.
Did you ever figure this out? Both mine and my Wife's 5s are doing this, were fine before iOS9. So far I've tried:
- Toggling Free Downloads Require Password
- Turning off Restrictions and toggling the above
- Signing in & out of the App Store
- Reboots in conjunction with the above
- Reset All Settings - killed the phone, got stuck on Apple logo
- Restoring again to iOS9 using my 8.4 backup (because of the above)
- Reviewing payment info
BTW occurs on all free downloads - free apps, updates + previously purchased item.
I have the same problem - only with a twist. My "password settings" is gone. It's just not there anymore. Used to be right under Apple ID, IIRC
I dont think this has anything to do with credit cards on file, or in-app purchases.
Different problem. You've started using TouchID - that causes it to disappear.
Good point. But I used to be able to turn it off for free apps and updates, though I can't recall where.
