Mail import problem

I have just transferred my data from a time machine backup to a new computer (both running Sierra).

Everything moved across fine using Migration Assistant.

However, when I try to open Mail it starts fine saying it is going to import messages but quits part way through the transfer and puts up an error message _ The Import failed. An error occurred during the import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder.

I have 600GB available space which should be enough.

When starting the import it says that I have something like 1,400,000 emails to import. This is many more than are visible on the time machine backup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as a machine without email is not a lot of help.

Mail works fine on the old computer from which the backup was taken.

New machine is 27", late 2012 model.

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Reindex messages           For El Capitan, try looking in V3. Sierra use V4

Thank you but sadly neither of those options has solved the problem.

It still comes up with same ludicrous number of emails and the same error message.
