Time machine backup size

I plan on purchasing a 27" 2017 iMac.  I am not likely to ever need more than 1TB for storage but will upgrade to the 2TB fusion drive to get increased SSD.

Will a 2TB external hard drive be sufficient for backup or do I really need 4TB (2 x iMac size)?
