Increasing memory on iMac

I have a 1tb HD on my 2012 27" screen iMac.

I want to increase it to 2 or 4 tb as I am close to the limit and the iMac struggles now.

How do I do that, please?

Please note - files have to remain on HD and not be transferred to cloud as the connections to the files relate to music studio software.

You cannot "increase" the space on your hard drive (it is space, not memory). You can uninstall the current hard drive and replace it with a larger one; however, that is rather involved in an iMac, so I would suggest you take to an authorized repair place and have them do it for you. You also should have some empty space on the hard drive for the OS to be able to perform its' tasks - think of the drive as being a CD or DVD and you are adding/removing songs; it will work better if it has enough room in one spot for a new song.

I'd recommend that you consider adding an external hard drive or two - you can transfer some things on your existing drive if you wish so you have more breathing room there and/or use the external drive(s).

Whatever you decide, do not forget to make frequent backups.
