iMac Finder crashes

When I'm using Finder to locate a file or application my cursor becomes a spinning color wheel and Finder stops responding. I have to relaunch Finder and start my search again. This can happen 5-10 times in the time it takes to locate one file.

I have an iMac, late 2013, with 2.7 GHz processor, 16 GB of memory, and am running Sierra 10.12.6.
