2015 MBP Corrupted drives and EFI issues
I've had my Early 2015 MBP 13" for almost a year, and I have had many issues ever since I upgraded to Sierra, ranging from Corrupted drives (internal partitions and external drive partitions) to EFI boot issues, where I can't switch between macOS and W10 easily or reliably. I've had to restore it 4 times, and I can't figure out what the issue is.
The most recent issue was one of my external drives decided to not move files onto it, (windows has no problem with this) and they started to disappear as I would move them onto it. I ran a test on the disk using diskutil and it said that the drive was corrupt and gave me an exit code 8. This has happened far too often than I would like it to be, and I used these same drives and devices just 8 months ago with a MBA (Late 2011) Which had run Mavericks, Yosemite, and El Capitan, with no issues. I believe that I installed Sierra 10.12.1 on the MBP when I first got it, (it was running El Cap at the time) and had no issues for around a month. Then the internal 256gb ssd corrupted itself and I had to do a full restore from my Time Machine, which took it back to the version of El Cap that had been running on my MBA at the time. I updated it after a bit to 10.12.2 where I had issues with internet connectivity and notes losing files between my laptop and my phone, and the copy paste feature stopped working with my iPhone 6.
I updated it to 10.12.3 in hopes of having it back to normal, and that's when the EFI stopped being able to switch between OS's effectively. It became a guessing game whether or not it would ever boot into macOS, and could take as long as half an hour to switch between them. I couldn't get recovery to work, so I used internet recovery and restored to 10.12.2 via Ethernet to lightning adapter with my Time Machine. After that it would swap os's okay, but the time issues were only solved by not having any USB devices or cables plugged into the machine. (no keyboards, mice, or drives when trying to option-boot into EFI swap). After that, I updated to either 12.10.5 or 12.10.6, and soon after I started having partitions on my external drives "corrupt" themselves.
macOS would take almost 10 minutes after boot or on plugging them in to even recognize them, and after it would, it would say it couldn't repair the disks, even though there was nothing wrong with them.
The first time that this happened, I actually was able to repair it, due to the issue being an incorrect header in the EFI partition map, possibly caused by Paragon and HFS+ on Windows 10. diskutil was not able to fix this, and I was able to individually fix it by manually editing the EFI partition map in hex. Nothing should have been writing to that, but it was able to be resolved. However, Disk Utility incorrectly assumed that the partition was corrupt and gave an exit code 8, instead of seeing the multiple EFI headers, for both MBR and GUID. The next time the drives corrupted themselves, they actually were not mountable, and I did have to wipe the drives to repair them.
All of the times that the drives have corrupted themselves, I have been using macOS, and every time that this has happened, both diskmgmt.msc and fsck_hfs have been in agreement about the disks being healthy. Only macOS seems to think that they are corrupted and does not want to mount them or mount them in rwx mode, only read only. I would love some suggestions on how to fix this, or possibly to see if something is wrong, hardware-side on my mac. This has been a never-ending nightmare, and Apple customer support has done what they could do, but I just want to either get this solved or downgrade my os back to El Cap or something that is stable again.
Thanks, Christian
