Alert when Apple watch moves out of iPhone range?

I have noticed that there is a "no iPhone" symbol at the top of the watch when it is out of range of my iPhone.  However, I can't seem to find a way to get it to give me an alert or taptic signal when I move out of range. That would be extremely helpful so that I don't accidentally leave my phone behind.  Does anyone see a way to add that functionality?

I find it unbelievable that they did not ship the watch with this feature.  I just forgot my phone at home and a simple taptic alert on my watch would have told me.  They must include this in the next software update.

Have you suggested it to Apple at the feedback page? Apple doesn't participate in these forums.

can't believe I'm reading this -- I just sent this exact feedback to Apple this morning.  The red "no iPhone" alert kept me this morning from leaving my iPhone in the car in the parking deck, and I realized they need to add a haptic or sound alert after a minute or so of being out of range.  That would be really useful when I'm about to leave it somewhere -- like when I leave on a bike ride and forget to put it in my jersey.  Or last summer I put phone down while playing  basketball and left it, nice guy picked it up and turned it in; but this year that red icon saves me.

The reason this watch is great is very subtle --  it's a bunch of small conveniences that add up.  Like dialing into a conference call out of the office and being able to read the dial-in passcode on my wrist while dialing on the phone.  That is a pain in the *** normally, now it is a piece of cake.  I really don't think Apple is marketing this device right.  Digital touch is nothing (for me), I don't care about the fitness stuff, but it's all these other small conveniences, like reading a text by just lifting a wrist or automatically seeing the very next calendar appointment every time you glance at watch.  These uses will be different for everybody, I know, but preventing you from leaving your phone behind is not an insignificant benefit, and everybody will use it sooner or later.

and again tell Apple - not the users here who can do nothing  --  https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch.html

I said in my post I had already sent feedback to apple.   This is a brand new, fairly complicated device and people are just figuring out how to use it.  Nothing wrong with sharing ideas on this forum as to how to take advantage of it.  I'd rather read about the experiences of other smart users than read 5,000 "it doesn't always turn on when I raise my wrist" or "why doesn't it do cat scans" posts.

When I had Pebble it fairly buzzed you when you went out of range, I could get to car door and it would buzz, back indoors to get phone.

It is extremely disappointing that apple overlooked this feature or didn't think it was important to include. Really?? This should have been the first thing they built in. Absolutely absurd. I've forgot my phone on 2 occasions and can't help but roll my eyes at the fact that I spent $349 on this.

When you finish rolling your eyes, you might think about reporting your thoughts to Apple. They are the ones that can do something about it:

For the last time, YES I reported it to Apple!  We are posting our frustration on here as well.  Now stop telling us to report it to Apple!

This is a technical support forum, not a place to rant. If you actually want to accomplish something, you provide feedback.

"For the last time"? None of your previous posts mentioned this, so presumably we're all supposed to guess.

Yes. I did send in a request. Sorry I had not mentioned that in my post. But to be fair--- and you've got to give me this at least--- I really really shouldn't have to request a feature like this. It should kind of go without saying, honestly. If nothing else, one of the two things this watch should do is 1) tell time (yes! bravo!) 2) alert you if you leave your phone behind (no :-( ). Considered that the majority of the apps require you to have your phone to ensure the watch works, you would think it would be the top priority of the creators to make sure that you don't accidentally leave your phone behind. The red icon phone out of range symbol is too little, too late if you've already run out and forgot it. It's just disappointing that's all. Allow me to have my disappointment :-). And maybe even meet me half-way and agree that this is a really important feature they maybe should have prioritized. It doesn't even seem that hard. I feel like it's in there and they just haven't given us the interface to turn it on. When I go out of range, instead of showing the out of range icon--> buzz me. That's it. Really that's it. That's the part that kills me. So close, and yet so far. I know this forum is to help solve issues, but I don't think it will hurt if we could share a little of our concern in this manner as well.

Maybe it should call the emergency services also!!

It does! Make 911 one of your favorite phone numbers and you can call from your watch. I think that's a great feature. I usually have the icon up and open if I'm leaving work late and the garage is dark. There's also a free watch app called 911HelpSMS that can text your designees and 911 itself (if you live in one of the states that has 911 texting enabled). Yep, the watch got that part right.
