iTunes: Unknown error 0x80090326 downloading po...
I have a PC on Windows 7 Professional with the latest OS updates. I have the latest version of iTunes as well. I have a set of podcasts that I subscribe to, and have done so for a long time. For the past 2 weeks I have had this problem with ONLY ONE of my podcasts, all of the others work just fine.
When this podcast, 'Science Friday,' tries to download I get the exclamation mark icon in the left-most column. When I click on that icon I get the message: There was a problem downnloading 'Science Friday'. An unknown error occurred (0x80090326).
It suggests checking for a correct URL and network connection, however those have not changed.
When I go onto the iTunes store I can find the Science Friday podcast and can see the episodes over the last 2 weeks that I've missed due to this problem. When I try to 'Get' them it shows me the episodes in a new Science Friday podcast section, with the cloud icon. If I try to download these, I get the same error message. I have not tried to play the ones from the cloud, but also don't understand why the subscribed podcast group doesn't show these episodes, just only in the cloud.
Is there a way to fix this problem. I know back in the XP days there was a problem with a release, but it seemed like it was broader than this, since this only seems to be affecting one podcast.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Mark Terry
Thank you Roger for pointing out that the URL listed for libsyn isn't a feed. That helped me find the correct feed and get my Science Friday podcasts working again.
The feed URL is: https://sciencefriday.scifri.libsynpro.com/rss (found at the bottom of the https://sciencefriday.libsyn.com/ page). This URL works for me in iTunes on Windows 10.
I've just tried to download both the latest episode and one a few weeks old of Science Friday (as a test) but hit the the same problem that you found. This may be because the server hosting the Podcasts is down, hacked or discontinued; or perhaps the URL has changed but the Science Friday guys have forgotten to update something.
I suggest that you try contacting the Science Friday producers, as you may be the first person to notify them that there is an issue. There is an email contact form on their website.
The friend - it's not you. Cartalk, This American Life and others download fine but I get the 0x80090326 error when trying to update Science Friday. Started about a month ago. Any luck with current downloads?
Emailed SciFri and received the following:
Thanks so much for your email. Science Friday has been working to make our website more secure by moving to "HTTPS." Unfortunately, there is a bug with Windows that has caused some problems with how our podcast feed is picked up by some of the podcasting apps. We're still working on fixing the Windows bug that prevents some users from accessing our podcast. In the meantime, we have created an alternate feed: https://sciencefriday.libsyn.com/
To manually subscribe to this podcast using the apple podcast app, follow these steps:
Open the apple podcast app
Click on the "+" sign in the upper left corner
Select "Add Podcast" from the menu at the bottom of the screen
Type https://sciencefriday.libsyn.com/ into the field
Click "subscribe"
Sincerely,
Rachel Bouton
Yes...the problem is that this ONLY works on the Apple podcast app. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH iTunes.
Did a little more research, and I think there's a BUG in iTunes for Windows that does not exist on iTunes for Mac. When I use the URL: https://www.sciencefriday.com/feed/podcast/podcast-episode, which is what comes up when you subscribe on iTunes on the Mac, it works just fine. You can subscribe and can access/get individual episodes on the Mac. When you do the exact same thing on the Windows version of iTunes, you get the error message. When you try to access individual episodes in iTunes, you get the same error as well.
So, iTunes for Windows appears to handle this URL differently, or the episodes have something embedded in them that is incompatible with the Windows version.
Subscribing to the URL mentioned in the response you got does nothing in iTunes. It shows a podcast line and "Continuous" but no episodes and no way to do anything else with it to try to update the podcast.
Strange thing is....'Undiscovered', a different SciFri podcast works ok. The subscription is a feedburner URL that is http based, and the individual episodes are https based, and subscribing AND getting individual episodes works just fine, so I wonder if the https explanation is a red herring??
I have windows 10 Itunes and am having same problem - no URL works.
In fact, I cannot FIND 'Subscribe by URL' anymore in iTunes in windows!
I do put all versions of URL above into the 'subscribe' and all fail same way.
Really miss my Science Friday! Please fix!
I also have 'Undiscovered' and it is workin. At first I thought it might have an issue too as my last episode is 6/29 - 'Mouse's Vineyard' but when I check directly on internet that seems to have been latest.

Uuummm!
If you can't find the Subscribe by URL option (which is named Subscribe to Podcast by the way), how do you manage to know that anything you do put in fails?
Subscribe to Podcast is on the File menu:
Sorry. My says only 'Subscribe'. It apparently depends on context. I had my iPod plugged in and was in that 'context'. So, yes, I was using 'Subscribe' which asked for a URL. I generally don't deal with my podcasts when my iPod is not plugged in. Perhaps, because the context is clear, where I was, the 'to Podcast' is left off. In any case, all the URLs do not work when entered. Yes, when my iPod is NOT plugged in, I do see the subscribe to Podcast on the file menu. I've not worked through all the combinations. I should have made that clearer to not waste your time.

The only way to "Subscribe by URL" is to use the option I mentioned previously:
and that takes you to here:
... where you can enter the URL for that Podcast. The URL is the address where the Podcast is stored and is unique for each Podcast series. All other methods involve simply clicking a subscribe button and letting iTunes deal with the URL.
However, all three of the URLs provided by Science Friday fail to do anything in iTunes. For anyone who wishes to try them for themselves, they are:
- https://sciencefriday.libsyn.com/ from the email mentioned above in Trek2200's post
- https://www.sciencefriday.com/feed/podcast/podcast-episode which I copied from the right-click Copy Podcast URL that appears in my Library
- https://sciencefriday.com/feed/podcast/podcast-episode which I copied from the Science Friday website
None of them work in iTunes.
Ultimately, the fix for this problem lies with the Podcaster, Science Friday, to contact Apple and for them to fix it between themselves. Apple will not take the lead on it, it is down to Science Friday to manage it.
https://sciencefriday.libsyn.com/ is not a feed, it's a web page listing episodes and so won't work in iTunes. The other two URLs work in iTunes on a Mac (the third one, http, redirects to the second one, https). It's possible that it's an issue with the security certificate in Windows.
Thank YOU c_r_s... it freaking works! I'm on Windows 7 Professional, so it seems to just work for Windows with this URL. I don't know why the combination of SciFri and Apple can't figure out how to just get this to work. I have emailed Rachel Bouton at SciFri to let her know that they should put the information on the SciFri page letting people know how to subscribe, and should work with Apple/iTunes to get the subscribe link fixed so that people can just subscribe.
