Time Machine constantly making new backup

My Time Machine is periodically but pretty constantly giving me the message that verification has failed and a new backup needs to be created. It has been an irregular but constant issue, happening 3 or 4 times in the past 12 months.

Could it be a failing hard drive? Or another issue with the Airport?

Thanks but I know *how* to do a new back up, I am asking about *why* it is requesting this every couple of months.

I thought my old time capsule may be failing due to the validation notification, so I bought a new 3TB time capsule. I still get the same error consistently but do get several successful between errors. Please fix this Apple!!!

I have the same problem on  my I-Mac, every six days it wants to make a new backup. I purchased this Time Capsule in July problem started in September. Apple has no solutions. I use Sierra 10.12.1 on my I Mac and I have this problem.

I run Sierra 10.12.0 on my Mac Book Pro and I don't have the problem Could this have anything to do with it?

My Time Capsule is older than that but, like you, has recently started asking to create new backups almost weekly (last example was new backup Thursday and now another new one required Sunday). I though maybe the HD was starting to fail (corruption issues) but from reading the forums it could be bad software in the 10.12 OS.

I have had the same issue and agree that it might be something with the computer being backed up rather than the time capsule itself--I have been getting this on a late 2015 iMac running 10.12, but I also have an old mac pro running 10.11 and back it up to the same capsule with no problems. Of course, this could be due to the fact that I use the laptop less frequently anymore, but it still seems suspicious. Pretty frustrating--makes the point of Time Machine kind of pointless when you have to erase and recreate the backups every month.

I have the same problem. Using a 2TB Time Capsule, a few years old, but never had a problem until two weeks ago, now every couple of days I get:

"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on “Time Capsule 2”. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."

Thought it was a hardware problem and looking at spending on a replacement but from these comments and others looks like an OS one? I'm on 10.12.1 Sierra and am pretty ****** off

Just weighing in that I have this issue too... and that's how I found this post, of course.  I've been having this problem for a month or 2.  I have a late 2009 27" iMac running 10.11.6 that's backing up to the same Time Capsule w/o issue, and a mid-2014 Retina MacBook Pro running 10.12.1 that's having the issue.  I've let it start a new backup a few times, but then in a few days it comes up with the same message again.

The MacBook Pro is almost always connected to the network, I don't often take it out of the house.  It's usually plugged in and the lid is closed when I'm not using it.  I'm not sure if any of these factors could be playing a part.  I'm letting it start a new backup now, but I'm fairly confident that I'll be seeing the message/error a few days later.  Given that these Macs are on different versions of OS X, I'm inclined to believe this is potentially an issue with Sierra.  Whatever the cause may be, I'd love to see the issue fixed before I actually need to use a backup...

Just a "me too" post. Started about a month ago, TM now starts new backup ~weekly. 2TB Time Capsule that's < 2 years old. Disk Utility finds nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, mine's the same unit and vintage. My new backups are random - sometimes it goes months, other times almost weekly. I can't help feeling its a OS X 10.12 problem and not a failing HD given how many people are reporting the same issue. No fix yet, though.

I've been having this issue ever since upgrading one of our iMacs to Sierra. The Time Machine (Time Capsule) backup for the one running Sierra fails to verify every few days and needs to be deleted and started anew. The iMac still running Yosemite does not have this issue, so it seems to be a bug in Sierra.

I will add to this group... My wife's Mac is a Mid 2014 15" MBP she backs up wirelessly to our 2014 Time Capsule and she has been having this issue for the last month or two. The first time it happened I connected her mac by ethernet cable to our Time Capsule for the initial backup, but its now like that third or fourth time this same error has come up. My Mac is a Late 2011 15" MBP, I am hard wired to an external drive and running MacOS Sierra up to date with no issues.

If its always been Time Capsules, I am not sure if its the TimeMachine software or the Mac's system software, but this feels like a software bug. The only unsupported software my wife runs is Aperture, thats where her photo library lives (ugh!)

Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on “blahblah Time Capsule”. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

So, based on something I read on another site, I opened Airport Utility and both my Time Capsule and my Airport Express (connected via Ethernet in bridge mode) had firmware updates available. I ran those updates and am trying another backup (yet again). If I don't post again within a couple of weeks that likely means time machine backups are 'verifying' without issues.

Thanks for that tip. I will try it too and hope it corrects the problem.
