Is my Hard Disk an expensive door stopper?

Yesterday afternoon I removed a USB HD without ejecting. In the past you would have been crucified for this but I can't remember the last time I ejected a thumb drive...

So, the HD, a Seagate with Goflex adapter, will no longer mount or be detected. It does power up/spin and the control lights are flashing slowly but it is not seen by the system. I have tried 3 separate Goflex enclosures: 2 USB and one Lightning. Nada. I have also swapped cables and USB ports. Finally I tried on 3 different computers (laptop and desktop). Left it connected overnight: spinning and warm to the touch i.e. it has been spinning all night but still won't mount.

To be specific, the HD is not seen by Finder, Disk Utility or Terminal.

Anything else I could try?

Most probably the hardware is still OK, but the registers are compromised. Very difficult to "repair".

First check that it is not gone alltogether:

Open Terminal and copy/paste this command:

diskutil list

this gives you a short list of the disk in your mac and connected outside.

If your Seagate is not there, it is gone definitely. But it will be there in this case.

What you can try is:

Try FirstAid again but in the RecoveryPartition.

When DiskUtility in the RP does not "see" the disk either:

read here:

https://www.cgsecurity.org/

Read the information and manual of TestDisk 7.1 (not 7.0), and download Testdisk.app 7.1

You have a very good chance to "save" the disk, with a repeated and lengthy process, but little chance to save your data.

Next time I would not buy Seagate, but a sturdy WD black. Makes as LaCie and other "beautiful" brands do not have their own disks but buy other parties disks and use that: not adviseable.

Door stopper seems to be the conclusion... Thanks for your help. TestDisk 7.1 couldn't see the disk either. The heads must have been writing when I disconnected the drive.

I get your remark on 'fancy disks' but Seagate are an OEM, aren't they?

Bad luck.

Well Seagate is a brand, I am not sure they make all their models themselves, but it is not generally recognised as one of the pros. They have special disks as the Barracuda, extra fast, but they are the only one...
