Invalid serial number

Hi all I went to use our old ipad 2 and it needed to update after much frustration it is now stuck in a DFU loop. I have managed to find the error and it is an invalid serial number. I have used my USB checker on my laptop and found somehow my son has changed the serial number of the ipad. I have two questions: a) Is it at all possible to change this back to the original number now its stuck in the DFU loop and b) How did he manage to do this? TYIA
