Dual

I'm having a strange issue with running a dual monitor on my Mac Mini.

Here's my equipment:

  • Late 2012 Mac Mini
  • Display 1: HDMI port->HDMI cable->Pioneer Elite vsx-03txh A/V Receiver->HDMI cable->Sony LCD TV
  • Display 2: THunderbolt port->Cable Matters Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt Port Compatible) to DisplayPort Cable->Samsung U28E590D LED monitor (DisplayPort)

Here's the problem:

Display 1 has been working fine for nearly 5 years, and continues to work correctly. I recently added the second monitor and I am seeing inconsistent performance. Any time there is a change to the display configuration in terms of which displays are turned on, the new display (Samsung monitor) freaks out and stops working (typically it tries repeatedly to connect and fails). The only way to get it to start working again is a full reboot of the Mini.

For example, if I have both displays on successfully and turn the Pioneer A/VR off, the Samsung monitor stops working This even happens if I turn the Sony TV off and leave the Pioneer on! When I turn the TV back on, the Samsung monitor starts working again.

If I put the displays in Display Sleep Mode, when I wake the displays the Samsung won't work.

Two tricky complications: First, this happened with another monitor I purchased first (an ASUS PB277Q which I returned thinking it was defective), so it's an issue with the Mac Mini, not the display. Second, the display is still recognized by macOS as being connected, and appears in the Display Preferences.

Any ideas on how to solve this?
