recent items keeps resetting to "none"

I can set recent items to a value, reboot, and all seems OK. A few hours later, the settings are back at "none".  Any suggestions how to fix this? Running 10.12.5 on an iMac 27 (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015).

The preference file may be corrupt. From your Finder "Go" menu > "Go to Folder" and copy & paste this path:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist

Press Return, then delete that file. A new plist file will be created and it now should function as expected.

I had the same problem.  I manually searched the Preferences folder and came across a com.apple.recentitems.plist.lock file.  What is the lock file?  Also, there are a lot of lock files with gibberish suffices appended.  What are they?
